With brunch being my favorite meal of the day, I felt rather compelled to try The Anchorage, which most recently won the 2018 James Beard Award for best new restaurant. In the heart of West Greenville, this restaurant showcases fresh, locally sourced ingredients from around the region. They carefully craft these ingredients to serve made from scratch food and update their menu daily! Want a crafted cocktail? Head upstairs to their bar where you can sit and order drinks. In the mood for wine or beer? They have both.
The Anchorage hosts the kind of environment perfect for hanging out with friends or having a delicious meal with your significant other. Not only is it well-lit – perfect for Instagram-worthy pics – it’s very quaint and rather modernized with brick walls and mounds of art hanging from the walls. You don’t have to feel as if you need to shout when chatting with the people you’re with or feel claustrophobic because the tables are spaced out enough that you’re unable to hear the conversation behind you.
Since Sundays are rather busy, I called ahead and was put on their waitlist. I only had to wait a modest 20 minutes before our table was ready. Our friends were already there waiting for us, so we joined them and skimmed the menu. I was more intrigued by brunch than dinner simply because I found more options for my liking. I no longer eat pork or beef, so brunch had more variety.
Our waiter greeted us with a smile and poured some water into my glass and then my husband’s. We didn’t want any alcohol, but our friends each ordered a cocktail, The Tiki Mary, and Michelada. The Tiki Mary consisted of tequila, falernum, lime, grapefruit shrub, luxardo, and tomatillo juice while the Michelada was made up of mezcal, tomatillo, lime, mole bitters, valentina, and salt.
Later, when our waiter came back to take our order, he asked what they thought of their drinks and one of our friends politely told him it was a bit too strong. Our waiter offered to make him another drink and not charge him for the Tiki Mary. My first thought was wow – what a great waiter! The rest of the staff is also friendly, polite and very enthusiastic!
We placed our order and only waited about 10 minutes. I was recommended the Chicken Fried Cauliflower, which contained a farm egg, pickles, house-made biscuit, hot sauce, honey, and of course cauliflower. When our order arrived, and I took the first bite, I was in heaven! Between the crispy fried cauliflower, hot sauce, and homemade biscuit, it was the perfect combination. My pickles tasted fresh and my egg was cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the Sweet Potato Ricotta Pancakes, which he described as fluffy, sweet and big enough to split with a friend. The whipped butter and maple syrup were paired perfectly together. Our one friend ordered the same meal as me and agreed that it was divine and had the ideal amount of heat to it while our other friend ordered the eggs benedict. He said the English muffin was fresh and the meal was perfect for someone who was moderately hungry.
The Anchorage is definitely more quality over quantity but, I’d rather dine at a restaurant that dedicates time to perfecting their food instead of throwing it all together. I believe Anchorage, which by the way, means something that provides a stronghold or connection definitely lives up to that definition. I’m already looking to forward to my next visit, which will be very soon.
